George William Edam

William George Edam worked as a driver for Wells-Fargo, on the fort Dearborn - to Fort Crawford - to Prairie du chien, Wisconsin route. He had a picture on the front page of a Chicago newspaper as driver of the team of horses pulling the freight wagon which was bringing the first load of lumber, for reconstruction, after the great chicago fire. He also worked as a musician by playing a fiddle in saloons and may have been accidentally shot and killed in a brawl in a saloon in some unknown town where he was working as a traveling musician. Another story was the Indians killed him. Another story is that while he was working for Wells Fargo he was killed by robbers. From the Long Prairie Leader the following obiturary taken on June, 1908 "Grandpa Edam, the blind gentleman who resided near Clotho, died at his home last Friday after a long illness. The funeral was held from the U.B. Church in Leslie and the large crowd of his friends attended. Mr. Edam had been blind for over 40 yers. Death was the result of the infirmities of old age. He was born in Virginia and had been a resident of Todd County for a long time. His wife and son have the sympathy of their neighbors."
