He was postmaster in Ridgeway Wisconsin, farmed at first with his father then alone in Ridgeway. He died at home of colon cancer. When he knew that he was going to die he called his 10 year old son, Donald, into the bedroom and told him that he was to be the man of the family now, and he was to take care of the two little ones and their mother.
