The Centennial Season!

Elkader Opera House
1903 - 2003

The Elkader Opera House is celebrating its centennial, and to help make it special the Opera House Players are working on ambitious plans for a centennial season. We have secured the rights for the following shows and are excited to make them part of this historical year.

You can help make it all a reality by taking part in one or several of the productions.

Our normal fall musical was held October 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 2003.  After lots of discussion, we chose a family favorite, SNOOPY!!!.

Based on the comic strip "PEANUTS" by Charles M. Schulz
Book by Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates,
Warren Lockhart, Arthur Whitelaw and Michael L. Grace
Music by Larry Grossman Lyrics by Hal Hackady

Several years ago, the Opera House Players performed a successful run of You're a Good Man Charlie BrownSNOOPY!!! brought back those loveable Peanuts characters with more enjoyable songs and stories.

As a special treat, we performed a replay of the very first musical to be performed in the newly built 1903 Elkader Opera House. George M. Cohan's The Governor's Son was performed on November 27, 1903. We recreated that opening on November 27, 2003 and into the following weekend. It was a perfect place to let live theater and belly laughs aid in your digestion.  They brought it in for one night, we're gave it to you for three!  The audience even joined in the celebration, many wearing period costumes.   For a pictoral  of that special evening, click here.

December brought us to the 10th Annual "Classic Christmas Fantasy" concert with seasonal music performed by talented area artists sharing their love of music.

December also brought us the opportunity to bring back those wacky nuns of Nunsense and Nunsense II fame in NuncrackersWe're pleased to announce that all of our original Nuns from Nunsense agreed to come back and take part in this special revival!  Not only that, but they had so much fun, they scheduled Meshuggah Nuns for Spring 2005.

The season continued into spring with the scheduled spring show March 26, 27 and April 1,2,3, 2004, with another side splitting British comedy, Run For Your Wife by Ray Cooney.

We finish up this wonderful season with a special performance of a phenomenal musical event.  Songs for a New World a musical by Jason Robert Brown opens June 25, 2004. The show features four OHP veteran performers and an amazing five piece combo of musical talent with music by a Tony award winning composer.  Definitely a series of performances that won't soon be forgotten.

All in all, a celebration of a great building and an important mile-marker in the rich theatrical history of this area. I hope you joined us for one and all of these wonderful events.
